Melissa Says: Oh, this is one of those unfortunate times when I have to be negative, but trust me, it's for your own good.
I was excited about the promise of fast! easy! shiny! color, but was soon disappointed after beginning the application process. Let me preface this by saying that I suppose if your hair is quite short, the problems I experienced with the applicator comb probably won't be quite as prevalent for you. But for me (my hair currently hits just below the shoulders), sliding the comb down my hair created LOTS of tangles immediately, and I still felt like I needed to mush the color into my hair with my other gloved hand anyway, because it didn't feel like the color was getting to all of the strands. I knew right away that this was going to be a pain applying, compared to simply squeezing it onto my hair and massaging it in to the strands as I usually do with my regular at-home color.
In addition to the annoying process of trying to get the product through my hair, I felt that I had to worry more about drops splattering around simply because I didn't feel like I had enough control of what was a) coming out of the comb and b) getting trapped in the tangles in my hair, creating globs. In short, the experience was not pleasant.
Once I had rinsed (after waiting the full time limit), I didn't think the included conditioner really made my hair feel softened enough, and it seemed more dried out than it usually is when I get done coloring. I also didn't think my hair had the fabulous shine it promised - in fact, to me it seemed more dull than before I used it.
Overall, I was disappointed. Back to L'Oreal Superior Preference 4G (Dark Golden Brown) for me! In fact, I bought some and used it a few days later, because my roots didn't even seem to have been fully colored with this stuff.

John Frieda Luminous Color Glaze
What They Say: "The professionals at John Frieda are renowned for bringing salon technology and professional products to the mass market.
They were first to offer breakthrough products like Frizz Ease® and they were the first to build a full hair care line formulated for specific hair shades.
And now, they’re the first to offer easy-to-use, at home, salon glazing.
Glazing is a process that’s been offered in professional salons for years to optimize the look and feel of dull, faded, lifeless hair. In fact, if you’ve ever gotten your hair colored at a salon, chances are you’ve had a glaze done.
Luminous Color Glaze™ delivers the results of a professional salon glaze, right in the shower. In just 3 minutes, you can give your hair a complete makeover, effortlessly."
Jen's Experience: I've been using this product for quite some time now in combination with my Nexxus Therappe Shampoo and Paul Mitchell Extra Body Mousse, and I will cut right to the chase here -- this product completes my Trifecta of Great Hair. This as well as the other products I mentioned work well alone, and make my hair shiny, healthy-looking, and full of body. But together, they are a force to be reckoned with.
I find this particular product to do great things with my hair color. In addition to adding shine, it seems to add some believable highlights to my hair, which I am currently dying dark blonde. In fact, in about a months time, I would say it lightened my hair a full shade, but the color was so nice that I frequently got compliments.
Alone, this product doesn't quite do what I expected in terms of shine, but I'm really glad that it doesn't weigh my hair down or cause it to look greasy. For those of you looking for a way to spice up your color, I highly recommend picking some of this up. You'll need to try it at least 3 times a week for about 2 weeks to see visible results in the color, but if you're like me, you'll start seeing an improvement in your hair right off the bat.

L'Oreal Feria Hair Color in Champagne Blonde
What They Say: "Discover colour that speaks to you. So pure and vocal and multi-faceted, it transforms every strand with triple highlights - for even more shimmering highs and lows. Definitely the end of flat, matte colour. Even the conditioner glistens hair with a new pure-shimmer concentrate. So express yourself ... one shimmering shade at a time."
Jen's Experience: I am very picky about my hair. I used to color it myself all the time, and then a friend of fine introduced me to a fabulous colorist in Atlanta that I used for years. I moved away and don't see the same colorist anymore, but I do love my colorist now, and have a hard time not going to see her and using up all my spending money on some terrific highlights.
On the other hand, highlights are pretty expensive, and I don't get to test out new products. So I've decided to expand my horizons and try the home coloring experience again for myself.
I purchased the Feria kit at Target after reading the back of every single hair color box in the store and changing my mind about the level of blondeness about every five minutes. I looked at the highlighting kits, such as the Couleur Experte that Melissa covered previously, but those seemed very complicated and I just wasn't sure I'd be able to make it look as good as it did on the box.
The Feria box claimed to give you multi-tonal color and shimmeriness, but the directions seemed simple -- no highlighting brushes required. Clearly this was the winner.
I took it home to kick off a spa night one weekend. I should be a good role model and say I did the allergy test and the color test before I started, but really, I just ripped open the box and started working.
Within an hour, I was blow-drying my hair with my new color. When I looked at myself in the mirror, I was caught a little off guard. I normally keep my hair a lighter shade, but clearly this shade is better for my skintone. My eyes became brighter and my skin looks tanner. My hair was super soft and shiny, and shimmery like the box said it would be. Even better, it really is somewhat multi-tonal. I'm not sure if the color is just accenting my previous highlights or if this is straight out of the box, but I do seem to have some variation of color throughout my hair, and it looks really natural.
I so dearly love my colorist, but with results like these, she might be seeing me much less often.
Tips and Tricks: I have a problem coloring the back of my hair thoroughly, which is a major problem because my roots are so dark. This time, I used clips just like my hairstylist does to break it into small sections. I'm not sure if it helped me to see better or if it just helped me focus, but I got everything covered in the back this time.

Revlon High Dimension Color Accents in Honey
What They Say: "New! Color Accents revolutionizes home highlighting. The breakthrough? An exclusive applicator comb that regulates the right amount of color every time—so you get salon-style highlights from root to tip. Fast. Easy. Beautiful. For natural and color-treated hair. In three universal shades. One of them, yours."
Melissa's DeLush Downlow: I am a chronic hair schizophrenic - I can't help it. I get the itch to make a change and I have absolutely NO patience. This gets worse when I don't have a current hairdresser (which I don't now), and so my every whim could lead to a trip to the drugstore and a night in the bathroom (and potentially me whining and crying afterward because I look in the mirror and get scared by what I did).
Well, I got the itch a couple of weeks ago. I decided to put brown over my colored auburn-ish hair. Then I wanted to put some highlights in it. I saw this new Revlon highlighting kit and thought what the heck, might as well try it - if it doesn't work, at least I still have something for the readers!
To start with, the instructions seem simple enough (except that the list of "items you will need" is a little intimidating and makes you wonder what you're getting yourself into:
• Smock or towel
• Cotton-tipped applicator
• Hand mirror
• Fine-tooth plastic comb
• Plastic clips
• Paper towels
• Clock or timer
• Well-lit room)
I just went forward the way I do when I usually highlight and tried to shake off the uneasy feeling from trying something new on my head, which is, you know, like OUT THERE for everyone to see and laugh at if it turns green. Mixing...check. (Fun comb promises to be EASY! and GREAT FOR PLACING highlights where you want them to be. Hmmmm...we'll see about that.) Practice squeezing tube evenly on paper towel...check.
I had put up sections of my hair so I could get the underneath as well. When I started, I noticed right away that the tube would sputter and spurt out excess highlighter. Even when I was trying my best to follow their instructions..."The secret to your success is to simultaneously squeeze and comb to ensure even application of highlighting mixture." Uh-oh.
That was the first problem. The second was that I ran out of product pretty quickly. I mean, I guess because I did so much underneath, that's one thing, but I felt like so much was wasted when it exploded out and I had to frantically try to wipe off the excess. So I had to actually go buy another kit afterward to get the front of my hair. And folks, my hair is not that long. *crosses fingers* YET.
In the end, you rinse and then apply a toner shampoo, which supposedly blends and adds dimension to your highlights. Well, all that did for me was all but eliminate all of the brown I had just put in my hair, and it turned a brighter reddish color than it was to begin with under the highlights. Not that it was hideous (or green!), the highlights were passable, but it just wasn't what I was going for. I'd show you a picture, but I just colored my hair again *blush* and it's dark DARK...almost black now. I told you. Hair schizophrenic.
Overall, definitely you'd be better off going with L'Oreal Colour Experte...I've never had ANY problems with that one, and it is MUCH easier to highlight with.

L'Oréal Paris: Couleur Experte

What They Say: "...the only at-home haircolor system that delivers truly multi-tonal results. This is accomplished through a 2-step process, first permanent all-over color, then illumniating highlights. With everything coordinated in a single box, the process is surprisingly simple, resulting in harmonious, natural-looking color."
Melissa's DeLush Downlow: I've used this about 4 times over the last 8 months or so, and I've always been happy with my results. Sure, taking your color into your own hands is scary, but this makes it almost foolproof. It doesn't leave my hair feeling dried out or fried afterward, and the shine lasts really well. The provided deep conditioner (which I can stretch for about 3 uses) is amazing and leaves your hair super silky. If you follow the instructions well and you haven't done anything to your hair in the last 6 weeks (and aren't going from black to blonde or something extreme!), the results are very true to description.
Here's how it works: You get a nice packaged set of supplies, with the two steps (color and highlight) separated, each with their own set of gloves. Just put the developer in the color bottle, put on your gloves, seal the top, snap off the tip, and mix! Then you carefully (over a towel, please, dears) apply your color in sections with the applicator. Make sure you coat all the hair. Let it develop for the alloted time. Next comes the rinse (be thorough), towel-dry your hair, and you're ready for the next step!
I like to take a bit of hair at the very crown of my head and put it up and out of the way with a clip. Put on your gloves, pour out the contents of the liquid bottle in step 2 and add the contents of the powder packet. Mix with the end of your application wand (your best friend for the next half hour). Then just apply as much or as little highlighting solution to strands of hair in wide or fine strips, whatever your preference. Now, it might help a bit to have someone nearby just to help with the very, very back - or just to make sure you've applied the highlights evenly in the back. I then let the crown loose and do the rest. My reason for this is that I like to have highlights from within the hair, not just on the top layer. They recommend doing your front face-framing highlights first, but I know how to conserve the solution until I get to the front, and want to make sure I get highlights all the way around. But if it's your first time, you may want to go ahead and start at the front and bangs area. Allow to process for the specified time. Start the timer AFTER you finish your LAST highlight.
*Highlighting Tips - a.) Don't glob, make sure it's even, especially no globs at the root. b.) Don't go all the way up to your scalp with the solution, but just barely to the root. c.) It won't be as bold as you think, so don't worry and stress over the highlights. I've found that they blend well into the color and don't come out white (I've never used light blonde, I've always used the brown or red colors). My highlights have always come out a nice subtle, shimmery gold-tone.
After that, just rinse out the solution and condition your hair with a third or so of the provided intense conditioner. No need to shampoo this first time. Trust me, your hair will feel like silk after using the conditioner. Style as usual.
